Odds are if we told you that Driven was at the launch of the new Haval range you wouldn’t say, ‘Oh, that’s one of the largest selling SUVs in the world’. But it turns out the new Haval range is one of the largest selling SUVs in the world – shifting more than a million units last year.

“HAVAL’s confidence in the New Zealand market is anything but shaky”

Most of those were sold in China — not all, just most. That highlights the problem when it comes to selling this brand: China.

When it comes to confidence in products from China, things are still a bit shaky.

Haval’s confidence in the New Zealand market is anything but shaky as they have opened three dealerships and are confident in securing six more by the end of the year.

After a short stint driving the H2 and H6, my confidence has been steadied, not only by the way both cars performed, but also by the way they looked.

Haval, the sister company to the Great Wall, hired a former BMW designer and that European influence is apparent — without the European influence on the price tag.

When compared with the Rav 4 or Tuscon, which are both at the higher side of $35K, you pay only $25,990 for the entry level version, or ‘Premium’ H2, and $30,990 for the ‘Premium’ H6 .

Both entry-level versions are stacked with features, and can be be upgraded to a ‘Lux’ model with more add-ons.

Standard on the 1.5L turbo petrol engine H2 are 18-inch alloys, sunroof, keyless entry and start, cruise control, reverse camera, blue tooth, parking sensors and a 7-inch touch screen – the Lux version gives you heated seats, panoramic sunroof, 19-inch alloys, and xenon headlights.

The mid-size H6, powered by a 2.0L turbo petrol engine, comes standard with 17-inch alloys – upgradable to 19s in the Lux version – and the same features as the H2, with additional blind spot monitoring.

There are two new models planned for 2018: a seven-seater SUV – the H7 – and a full-time 4WD called the H9 – a similar size to the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Haval’s 5-year, 100,000km warranty shows the confidence they have in their technology.
